Before sunrise

Your morning begins before dawn at Klein Joostenberg Parking Lot, approximately 30 minutes from Cape Town CBD. You will meet your SACAA-certified pilot, take hot coffee, and watch the envelope inflate under torchlight — a genuinely spectacular process that takes around 20 minutes.

The safety briefing

Before boarding, the pilot briefs you on boarding, the landing position (knees bent, holding the rope handles, facing the direction of travel) and what to do when the basket touches down. It takes a few minutes and it is the reason landings are almost always uneventful.

In the air

Lift off is so gentle that most guests miss the moment the basket leaves the ground. You float for approximately one hour above vineyards, olive groves, farm dams and historic Cape Dutch farmsteads. There is no wind chill because you travel with the wind, and between burner bursts it is completely silent.

Landing and the toast

The pilot picks a landing field on the day, the chase crew meets you there, and the morning finishes with a sparkling wine celebration beside the packed-up balloon.

Cape Town Ballooning operates under a valid Air Operator Certificate issued by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA). Our chief pilot holds full commercial balloon pilot certification with thousands of hours of flight experience, and we carry compulsory aviation insurance.

The weather discipline

We assess conditions the evening before and again at around 03:30 on flight morning. Marginal conditions mean a cancellation, and a cancelled flight is rescheduled free of charge or refunded.

The weight limit is 130 kg per guest. Pregnant guests cannot fly, and children must meet our minimum age and height requirements. You stand for the full flight, so reasonable mobility is needed.

Getting there

Take the N1 towards Paarl, exit at the R304 Stellenbosch turn-off and follow the R304 south to Klein Joostenberg. Allow 30 to 40 minutes from Cape Town CBD on empty pre-dawn roads, and free parking is available on site.

Afterwards

Breakfast is not included with sunrise flights, and there are excellent farm-style breakfast spots minutes away. Many guests carry on into a full Winelands day of tastings in Stellenbosch and lunch in Franschhoek.
